Recipe

Make Churros at home

Serves 4Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon for coating
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk and 4 oz (115 g) dark chocolate for dipping sauce

How it's made

  1. Bring water, sugar, salt and butter to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Remove from heat, add the flour all at once and stir hard until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Spoon the warm dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
  4. Heat 2 inches of oil to 350 F (175 C).
  5. Pipe 5-inch lengths into the oil, cutting with scissors, and fry 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden.
  6. Drain on paper towels and roll in the cinnamon sugar.
  7. Warm the milk, melt in the chocolate and stir until thick, then serve alongside.

Variations

  • Porras: thicker, softer, plain churros.
  • Filled churros: with dulce de leche or cream.
  • Churros rellenos: filled and chocolate-dipped.

Cook’s tip: Pipe a few test pieces first; a dough that is too runny will spread and absorb oil.
